Wiki Reflection

I am a very impatient person. As soon as I get something new I want to use it, wear it, read it -- whatever. So I went ahead and started a wiki for my 3rd grade team. I'm team leader this year and I had a vague idea that it might be useful. Then all of a sudden it was useful! Did you ever put those questions out there for input from your team or faculty and then have to comb through a hundred emails to see who said what? Or worse go through the emails to see who said nothing or "whatever everyone else thinks".

So collecting data is my aha! And then I thought about our team's ABC. WE all wrote really good reflective answers for our questions ... in fact we all said about the same thing. I think there would be less of that repetitive writing if we all access the "final" document.

So anyway I've asked my team to sign up and become members to our wiki and have told them when I need their input they have to go to the wiki and go to the Needs Response page and vote. Maybe while they are there they will read my "Thoughts" page -- things I think we ought to do as a team but I really don't have the authority as team leader to insist we do. I'm thinking of it as an old advertising and sales method where you build demand first.

I love your idea for using a wiki to keep your teammates organized! I'll be a first-year team leader this year also and mentioned in my wiki reflections how I'd like to try using a wiki for that purpose. I'd love to view your wiki and "borrow" some of your ideas! Are you using wikispaces or some other site? A suggestion is to create a calendar of events(for middle school this is especially helpful for parent conferences as well as major tests/project due dates). I really like the needs response idea...that way the others know if you're just thinking out loud or actually need some input. Please shoot me an email denise_mayen@roundrockisd.org if you're willing to share the link. Thanks, Denise

I think your wiki for team planning is a great idea. It's always hard to convince others to try something new, but I think that once your team sees how a wiki can help them, they will be sold on the idea. I think the trick is to make it convenient and useful for them. I'm hoping to use a wiki for library planning with grade level teams this year. I think it will be a great place to post some of the shared documents and record our plans for lessons.
